Are you planning an Italian dinner party or preparing a charming, romantic dinner for two? This week’s blog will navigate you through a perfect evening of Italian food and traditions.
Eat locally and eat seasonally are the two cardinal rules for Italian cooking. Our culture eagerly anticipates the arrival of seasonal ingredients from wild fresh strawberries in spring to homegrown mushrooms in the fall. Try shopping at your local farmers market, usually their bounty was picked in concert with the sunrise and bursting with flavor. There are truly a variety of home-style dishes to choose from, so trust your palate and select one that will be as fun to prepare as it is to eat.
Much of Italian life revolves around the dinner table and remember that Italian food is blessed twice, one for the art of cooking and one for the art of eating.
Three courses are usually served so lets begin…
Select a Bruschetta for the appetizer or an Antipasto Salad composed of creamy mozzarella balls, olives, artichoke, peppers, fresh tomatoes and a variety of cured meats such as salami or pepperoni. Italians consider dinner as an opportunity to relax, laugh and share with family so if authenticity is desired, schedule for a extended, leisurely event.
Lasagna or Eggplant Parmigiana make great choices for the second course and are always a crowd favorite but if it is romance you are pursuing, think about a Veal or Grouper Piccata.
To round out the meal, offer a nice coffee or a glass of Grappa with a plate of fresh fruit, Italian baked cookies, pastries and cake like a creamy layered Tiramisu.
Memories are made while enjoying a good meal and Italians believe that the next best thing to eating food, is talking about it. Mangiamo! ~ Lets Eat!
